Work rights & restrictions

Practical answers to help you compare your options.

Section 01

Studying & family residence

Can I take a part-time job, intern or work while studying in China?

A study-type residence permit does not give you unrestricted permission to work.

Eligible work-study activities and internships have specific conditions. Off-campus activities require the necessary school approval and residence-permit annotation before you start, where applicable. An offer from a business does not replace these formalities.

Do not assume that teaching languages, coaching sports or taking another paid part-time role is allowed simply because you are enrolled at a school.

If ordinary employment is your main goal, assess the appropriate work and residence arrangements rather than relying on student status.

Can I work while holding a family-related residence permit?

Family-related residence generally does not authorise ordinary employment. Permission to live with your family and permission to work are separate matters.

If you want to join a company or work through your own business, assess your work permit eligibility and the necessary residence arrangements before starting. Owning shares in a company does not, by itself, authorise you to work for it.

Section 02

Business visits & work changes

Can I work for a Chinese company or run my own business on a business visa?

A business visa is for permitted business visits, not ordinary employment in China. Visiting suppliers, attending meetings and discussing business are different from taking a job or working in your company on an ongoing basis.

For example, a business visa does not authorise you to teach languages or coach basketball. Registering your own company does not change the work rights attached to that visa.

If you plan to work in China, assess the appropriate work permit and residence route before starting. The actual activity matters, not just what you call the arrangement.

What should I arrange before changing employers, taking an additional job or changing my role?

Check the required procedures before you change employers, start an additional job or substantially change your role. Your work authorisation is tied to the approved employer and work arrangements.

For example, approval as a sales manager in your own company does not automatically allow you to teach at another organisation. Even another sales position with a different employer requires a separate assessment.

When leaving an employer

Coordinate cancellation or changes to the existing work permit and the application with your next employer. At the same time, confirm whether your residence permit needs to be changed, cancelled or replaced, and how to maintain lawful stay during the transition.

Do not rely only on the expiry date printed on your residence permit. A change in the basis of your residence can require action while the document still shows time remaining.

Leaving a job does not automatically mean you have overstayed. However, failing to handle the required procedures can affect your lawful stay and later applications. Check the arrangements before leaving, moving cities or starting the next role.
