No. Registering a company in China does not give you a visa, a work permit or the right to live in China. The company is a business; your immigration status is a separate application.
What the company can do is employ you. If you meet the work permit conditions and the company genuinely operates, it can apply for your work permit, and you then apply for a work-type residence permit.
Company, work permit, residence permit: three separate things
Registered with the market regulator. Lets you do business, sign contracts, issue invoices and hire staff. Gives you no personal immigration rights.
Issued to you as an employee, on your company’s application. You must meet the category conditions, such as a degree and experience, points, or a local route.
Issued by the exit-entry administration once you hold a work permit. This is what lets you live in China long term.
What your company needs to support your application
- A real role for you, with a salary the company actually pays and declares
- Genuine business activity: contracts, invoices, a bank account in use, regular tax filings
- An address that meets local registration rules
- Up-to-date annual reports and no abnormal status with the market regulator
Authorities look more closely at newly registered companies with no activity. A company set up only to obtain a visa often runs into trouble at the first renewal. Read what your company needs to maintain.
The usual order
- Check your work permit route
Degree and experience, points, or a local legal-representative route. Estimate your points.
- Register the company
Choose a city where your route is available. See the registration steps.
- Start real business activity
Open the bank account, sign contracts, issue invoices and file taxes.
- Apply for the work permit and residence permit
Through your company, as its employee. See the work visa steps.
Registration is the easy part. Plan the work permit route before you register, not after.

Can I stay in China on a business visa while my company is being set up?
You can visit for business on an M visa, but not work in your company day to day. Visits for meetings, sourcing or signing documents are fine within the visa’s limits.
Can my company also sponsor my family?
Not directly. Once you hold a work-type residence permit, your spouse and children under 18 can usually apply for dependant residence permits linked to yours.
Does a bigger registered capital help my visa application?
Not by itself. Authorities look at real activity and your role. Set a capital you can actually contribute, as shareholders generally need to pay it in within five years.
What if I do not qualify for a work permit?
You can still own the company and manage it from abroad, visiting on business visas. Some owners appoint a manager in China. Read the guide for owners without a degree for other routes.
